The many faces of Roger Steffens. Great story teller and Bob Marley collector.
Happy Birthday Bob
I was so honored to donate one of my books ( www.samdiephuis.com/book ) to Roger Steffens‘ reggae collection yesterday. What an amazing guy! Every time I hang out with him I am inspired.
Here’s the intro to his Wikipedia page. It doesn’t do him or his collection justice but…
Roger Steffens (born June 17, 1942) is a Brooklyn, New York born actor, author, lecturer, editor, reggae archivist, photographer, producer. Roger is perhaps best known for his reggaearchives, in particular his archives of Bob Marley. Six rooms of his home in Los Angeles house his archives, which include the world’s largest collection of Bob Marley material. Based on these archives Roger lectures internationally with a multi-media presentation called “The Life of Bob Marley”. Roger’s radio career began in New York in 1961, and was co-host of the award-winning Reggae Beat on KCRW in Los Angeles and was syndicated on 130 stations worldwide in the 1980s. Roger has two children, Kate and Devon.

I was hanging out the with one of Bob Marley’s precusionists the other day and he told me that this was a house where the Wailers did a lot of practicing. Who knows maybe he wrote some of their music here?
Anyway, I went inside and this is a picture of a nice woman who lived in the building.

Trenchtown residents with some of the architecture. -By Sam Diephuis
The Trench Town Reading Center is amazing. A little sanctuary in the middle of a pretty rough area of Kingston. Roslyn Ellison came from Canada to Trench Town in 1993 and started the center with nothing and has kept if functioning ever since. With the help of many friends and local Trench Town residents the library has hundreds of books, teachers, and is a safe place for kids to come and learn and stay off the streets.
Trench Town is more than Bob Marley and reggae. Its a real place that needs help. Not much has changed since Bob lived here in the early 60’s and it’s still a really tough place to make it out of… Remember that when you are listening to some of his lyrics. Here’s the website if you would like to donate.
